World champion Fernando Alonso met with the Modena district attorney in Italy today, to answer questions about the Ferrari espionage case.
Alonso met with magistrate Giuseppe Tibis, who is in charge of the criminal investigation surrounding former Ferrari engineer Nigel Stepney.
The McLaren driver answered questions regarding the email exchange he had with Pedro de la Rosa earlier this year, which allegedly confirmed Stepney had leaked confidential information from Ferrari to McLaren's then-chief designer Mike Coughlan, who had since been suspended by the team.
Alonso, who spent two hours with Tibis, is not a suspect in the Italian investigation and was invited as an 'informed party' to answer questions.
He also told Tibis that at the time of the email exchange, he was not aware that any laws were broken in obtaining the information.
According to sources, other known names in Formula One have also been invited to answer questions as witnesses.
Last month, Tibis issued several McLaren officials with a formal warning that they are also being investigated in the affair.
