DOUBLE TRAGEDY
The karting world was hit by a double tragedy in November with the deaths of two popular drivers in the course of just one week. We know in our hearts and are often reminded that motorsport can be dangerous, but so many laps are covered and so many events take place without serious incident that when a life is taken away from us it comes as a terrible shock. For a second fatal accident to follow on so soon after really focuses the mind.
The long circuit fraternity had gathered at Silverstone on the first weekend of November for the end of season climax of the BSA National Championships and MSA British Superkart Championships in a combined meeting with the Walter Hayes Formula Ford Festival. An incindent involving 53 old Richard Weavers occured in the closing stages of the final kart race of the weekend and the race was immediately red-flagged. Sadly, although emergency teams were immediately on the scene, Richard's life could not be saved.
Just one week later, on November 12th, another group of karters were enjoying the second ever meeting for the new owner/driver Easykart category in the UK at Buckmore Park organised by Kart Racing Promotions Ltd. Twenty-nine year old Adam Goatley from Sidcup, a regular at the circuit, was involved in a collision in the Pre-Final with another driver and suffered serious injuries from which he later died in hospital.
Two terrible accidents that have devasted the victim's families and friends. Unrelated incidents other than Richard and Adam were doing what they loved, karting. To their loved ones and friends we send our sincere condolences at this terrible time.
